Pengembangan
Pesawat ini pertama kali terbang 1959. Lebih dari 1.000 pesawat dibuat dan 880 di antaranya masih beroperasi di seluruh dunia, terutama di CIS dan Afrika. Pada Agustus 2006, total 448 An-24 masih dioperasikan oleh maskapai penerbangan.
Pesawat ini didesain untuk menggantikan pesawat piston transpor Il-14 untuk penerbangan jarak dekat-medium. Pesawat ini juga desain untuk beroperasi pada landasan yang dipersiapkan dan kasar. Desain sayap-tinggi melindungi mesin dan propeler dari puing/serpihan, dan perbandingan/rasio tenaga:berat lebih tinggi dari pada pesawat setaranya. Mesinnya kokoh dan keras, serta tidak membutuhkan peralatan canggih untuk perawatannya.
Pembuatan purwarupa dan produksi massal utamanya dilakukan di Kiev-Svyetoshoni, dengan produksi 985 pesawat, selebihnya 180 dibuat di Ulan Ude. Produksi selanjutnya 197 varian pesawat angkut barang dilakukan di Irkutsk. Perusahaan Pesawat China Xian membuat tiruan dari An-24 dengan nama Yunshuji Y-7. Produksi teteap berlanjut di China, walaupun produksi di Ukraina telah dihentikan pada 1978.

•An-24RV : Turbojet boosted version. Similar to the An-24V, but fitted with a 1,985-lb (900-kg) thrust auxiliary turbojet engine.

•Y-7-100 : Improved version with redesigned cockpit and cabin, also fitted with winglets.
•Y-7-200 : Fitted with new avionics, winglets are deleted.
•Y-7-200A : Powered by two Pratt & Whitney PW127C turboprop engines.

•On January 19, 2006, a Slovak An-24 military transport with 43 persons on board (of which 28 were soldiers) crashed in Hungary, only 3 km from the Slovak border. Only one person survived, and 42 were reported dead. The plane was carrying Slovak KFOR forces that had been serving in Kosovo for half a year.
•On June 25, 2007, a Cambodian PMTair An-24 commercial flight with 16 passengers and six crew on board crashed in mountains 130km south of the capital Phnom Penh. The flight was en route from Siem Reap, near the historic Angkor Wat temples, to the coastal town of Sihanoukville.
